FAQs

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. It actually takes a lot of courage and acknowledgement of your own needs to reach out and ask for help. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I’ll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

This is a really great question and one that comes up often.  The biggest differences are training and experience and provision of strategies and tools.  A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way by teaching you skills and an alternative perspective, by listening to you without judgment or expectations, and by helping you learn to listen and prioritize yourself.  Furthermore, talking with me is confidential which means that you won’t have to worry about others "knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotions, a therapist can help you understand and manage these.  Don't get me wrong - friends and family can be a valuable means of support but a therapist can provide you with tools that will last a lifetime.

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

Wow, another great question!  It is very important for you to fit well with the person you are going to share personal information with and rely on for expert guidance.  You can determine if the therapist is right for you by how comfortable you feel, by how well you believe you are heard and understood, and by if you believe the therapist can offer you what you need. You may get a vibe quickly or you may have to attend a few sessions to determine if the therapist is the best fit for you.  Either way, it can be helpful to think of some questions to ask a therapist when interviewing them. Yes, I said interview as you are basically hiring a therapist to work with you. Some questions to ask may be - what do you value in therapy, have you ever worked with someone with my concerns or issues, what are your therapeutic approaches, interventions, or philosophies, how long do you recommend therapy, how will I know when I am done with therapy.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medications can be effective, but alone they might not resolve your issues or concerns. Sometimes it is helpful to have medication in conjunction with therapy to help stabilize moods and provide more clarity when doing the therapeutic work. Our work together will be designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and increase your ability to manage these differently and/or better.

How does therapy work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person is an individual and comes to therapy with different concerns and goals, how therapy works and how you will be involved will vary.  Since you are an individual, my therapeutic approach will be tailored to your specific needs and goals.  We will frequently revisit your goals to assess your progress and make changes as needed. I will frequently request your feedback and input in our work together as your input matters.  Your responsibility will be to show up, engage and participate in our sessions, complete practice assignments, and then apply the strategies and tools you learn in your daily life.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to provide because there are many factors that determine this.  Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them, and the length of time it may take for you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.  We will continue to reassess our work together and evaluate your progress along the way.  Sometimes, however, the length of time for therapy is determined by insurance.  We will discuss any limitations for sessions in our initial session and as this information is updated.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of our sessions. Your active participation will be crucial to your improvement. It will be important for you to take what you learn in our sessions and apply these new skills, strategies, and tools in your everyday life.  The overall goal of therapy is to help you get to a place where you feel better and function better than when you first started therapy.

What is the process to connect with Liz?

I know getting started with therapy can be confusing especially because state and federal laws, licensing boards, and insurance plans require all mental health professionals to follow very specific guidelines.  Here are the steps to us getting connected and beginning our therapy journey:

  • Complete the request an appointment form and the Client Intake Form.
  • I will call you on your preferred phone number to discuss if I can provide the services that you need and to explain my services and process.
  • If we agree to work together, then I will gather your information and schedule our first virtual session which will be an intake assessment.  this assessment is approximately 90 minutes.
  • You will receive an invitation link based on your communication preference which will invite you to Therapy Notes.
  • You will set up your Therapy Notes portal account where you will have access to all documents in my practice as well as your chart.  There will be instructions to help you with this process.
  • I will send you the forms and consents for you to complete and sign on Therapy Notes.  This are all able to be completed and signed without you having to print documents.  All of these documents will be saved in Therapy Notes in your portal for easy access and to print when needed.  Be aware that there are 11 total forms and consents you will need to complete and sign.  Please complete and sign all forms and consents prior to our first session in order to keep our focus on what brought you into therapy.
  • After our initial virtual session, we will discuss the frequency of appointments and then schedule these.
  • If you are interested in having access to a HIPAA-compliant texting option with me, then I will send you a link to Spruce for this.  Spruce is the phone network I use for calls, email, fax, and texts.  There is an encryption texting option that will require you to download the Spruce app.  This app is at no extra cost to you.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Rates & Insurance

  • $125 for 50 to 60-minute session (initial assessment session is $150 for 90 minutes)

INSURANCE

Accepting:

  • UHC (UBH) Commercial in SC, CA, and UT
  • Optum EAP
  • Aetna Commercial SC
  • Cigna Commercial SC, CA, and UT

I am currently in the process of credentialing with numerous insurances at this time in SC, CA, and UT and will provide updates when available.

If you have health insurance and I am not currently in network, you can speak with your plan to verify out-of-network mental health (or behavioral) services available to you.  Some insurance companies will reimburse all or some of the cost after receiving what is called a "superbill" from me.  This document outlines the services you received and the cost.  You will be required to pay all fees up front to me following each session.  If you want to inquire with your insurance about these benefits, then I encourage you to ask the following questions:

  • Does my health insurance plan include mental health (or behavioral) benefits?
  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for these services?
  • Do I have a deductible?  If so, what is it and have I met it yet?
  • Do I have a co-pay or cost share? If so, what is the amount?
  • Does my out-of-network plan limit how many sessions per calendar year I can have?  If so, what is the limit?
  • Do I need a referral from y primary care physician in order for services to be covered?
  • Do you accept superbills from an out-of-network therapist for my reimbursement?

If you have an employee assistance program (EAP) through your employer, they will provide you with a specific number of sessions and time period for these. EAP will pay for these sessions at no additional cost to you.  However, you will need to verify if I am covered by your EAP services as they often contract with specific providers.

PAYMENT

I accept all major credit and debit cards as forms of payment through the HIPAA-compliant platform called Therapy Notes. All payments (co-pay, private pay, or other) are required in full at the time of the scheduled session.  We can further discuss your financial responsibility for sessions during the phone consultation.

CANCELLATION POLICY

I reserve appointment times specifically for clients and request these times be honored.  I require a 24-hour notice if you should need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, otherwise your credit card will be billed the late cancellation fee which is the cost of an entire session at $125.  Insurance does not pay this fee and will not reimburse you for it.  Therapy is a commitment and will require you to set aside time for us to work together.

NO SURPRISES ACT (under The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021)

You have the right to receive a "Good Faith Estimate" explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under this law, health care providers, including me, need to provide individuals who do not have insurance or who are not using their insurance for services with an estimate of expected charges for these services, including psychotherapy.

You have the right to receive a "Good Faith Estimate" for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy.  This is just an estimate and as I gather more information about your symptoms, conditions, and severity of these, your "Good Faith Estimate" may be revised to reflect this new information.  Any time this estimate is revised, you will be updated, and a copy will be provided to you through the Therapy Notes portal.  You have the right to request an updated form at any time in your treatment.

You have the right to dispute a bill that you receive from a provider when it is more than the "Good Faith Estimate" you were provided.  Make sure to save a copy of this estimate for your records and it will also remain available to you on the Therapy Notes portal.  The Notice listed below is for your review only.  You will be provided with a completed Good Faith Estimate by me by our first session which will outline the estimated cost of my services. For questions or more information about your rights to a Good Faith Estimate, visit Ending Surprise Medical Bills | CMS

The HIPAA law describes how medical, including psychotherapy, information is used and disclosed and how you can gain access to this information.  All information revealed by you in a therapy session and most information placed in your chart (electronic, paper, or oral) is considered "protected health information" (PHI) by HIPAA.  Your protected health information cannot be distributed to anyone else without your informed and voluntary written consent or authorization. There are exceptions to disclosure of your health information without your written consent or authorization and these are provided to you further in this notice and in a document you will receive on Therapy Notes.
